Class Photo at Karoro Beach after our Clean Up

We are learning to understand what a living landscape is.
We are learning what a living landscape is and how people's actions effect it.
We are learning to take action to improve our local environment.

Ruma Rima had an interesting trip down to Karoro Beach. We went to pick up rubbish and investigate the types of rubbish found. We were shocked at the amount we found as first glance would indicate that there was very little. After our clean up we all had a game of volleyball on the sandy court. The game was a lot of fun. The beach is a fantastic place to visit and play so we need to look after our local resources/areas.
Students have written about their experiences in a writing form of their choice. They needed to include specific language features and emotion.

We are learning to add descriptive words in our writing and use words that make the reader feel a certain way.

The air was as cold as stone as the class walked down to the Karoro Beach to pick up litter dropped by people or washed up by tides. The class was divided into groups that parents volunteered to chaperone, luckily I was in the same groups as Breanna my BFF and Amanda, Hannah's mother was our chaperone. The group members were myself, Breanna, Hannah, Hamish and Issac.
The beach looked clean at first glance but it was when we looked under the driftwood when I felt a tsunami of anger rush over my head. I never expected a rubber jandal or a cap to show up and pipes that were old and had some brown stuff on the end but we also found some other weird things like, a syringe that might have had contained some medicine against a cow disease and a vial filled with a yellow unidentified liquid that might be illegal drugs or something else yucky. On the cycle trail in the penguin zone I was shocked to see rubbish in between the trees forming a cave like shape. As my group went in the first thing we saw was plastic but the big thing that was in there was a massive piece of metal.
Although the beach was a tiny bit cleaner we, and I mean all of humankind, need to decide if we want beaches covered in litter or beaches litter free and healthy. In half an hour our entire class found 498 pieces of plastic and that’s not cool. It’s your choice to look after the environment. by Emma

  3. Kia ora Ruma Rima,
Tumeke - it's great to see you being Kaitiaki of your environment. It is sad that there is so much rubbish on the beach. Well done for learning to take action to improve your local environment. How do you think you can spread the word about what you have done and encourage people to do the same AND more importantly not to leave rubbish behind?

    1. Thank you Tania for the comment. It is true that there is so much rubbish on the beach but the sadder thing is that people throw the rubbish out and that rubbish that they throw out kills the sea creatures.

    3. Hi Milla I am Jordyn from Karoro School. I really like the way you said 'look after the world'. Just letting you know that the bad smoke that goes into the air and the rubbish that goes into the sea and washes up on the beach is could pollution. There are 2 tips of pollution, air pollution and sea pollution. Yes I wish that pollution in 1 year will not be a thing. Then that is one less problem to worry about.
